“走調兒”有兩層意思：人唱歌時音不準和樂器音不準。to go out of tune 的主語為樂器時，指樂器音不準。如果想說人唱歌時音不準，主語不能用人稱代詞，而要用one's singing。

　　1. “走調兒”的第一個意思是“人唱歌或唱戲不合調子”，也說“跑調兒”。英語常用 can't carry a tune/to fail to carry a tune來表示。例如：

　　He cannot carry even a simple tune. 他唱個簡單曲子都走調兒。

　　None of them could sing in tune. 他們中間沒有一個人唱歌不走調兒。

　　2. “走調兒”的第二個意思是“樂器的音不準”。英語中多用to go out of tune或 to be out of tune表示。例如：

　　In time a violin goes out of tune, and sounds awful. 過一段時間以后，小提琴就會走調兒，而且聲音難聽。

　　3. “音準”的意思是樂器“不走調兒”。英語表達就是 to stay in tune/to be in tune。例如：

　　Pianos stay in tune much better than most stringed instruments. 鋼琴比大多數(shù)弦樂樂器音準。

　　4. “調音”的意思是“把弦樂器調整到合乎規(guī)定的恰當音階”，也稱“調弦”。英語表達為 to tune, to tune up, to check the tuning, to key up。例如：

　　It takes skill to tune a piano. 為鋼琴調音需要技巧。

　　The orchestra is tuning up and the concert is about to begin. 管弦樂隊正在調音，音樂會馬上就要開始。
